Canterbury’s Top School Cricket Teams Set for First XI Cup Qualifier Final

4 November 2026

Two of Canterbury’s leading school cricket teams will go head-to-head today as Christchurch Boys’ High School and Christ’s College battle for a place at the National Secondary School Boys’ First XI Cup.

The Canterbury qualifying final will take place on the Nursery Ground at the Hagley Oval Precinct, with both schools looking to secure the region’s coveted spot at the national tournament.

Formerly known as the Gillette Cup, the National Secondary School Boys’ First XI Cup is one of New Zealand’s premier secondary school cricket competitions, bringing together the country’s top school teams to compete for national honours.

Today’s match carries plenty of significance, with the winner earning the right to represent Canterbury at the national finals, to be held at Lincoln in December.

With a proud cricketing history at both schools and a place on the national stage at stake, the final promises to be a competitive encounter between two of the region’s traditional school cricket rivals.

The Canterbury Cricket Trust is pleased to welcome both teams to the Hagley Oval Precinct for this important fixture and wishes Christchurch Boys’ High School and Christ’s College all the best as they compete for Canterbury’s place at the national finals.
