Situated in the midst of this is the venerated Hagley Oval – a world class sporting venue, which dates back to 1867 and is widely considered to be the cornerstone of Canterbury and New Zealand cricket.
Hagley Oval is more than just a world-class cricket ground though — it’s a community venue at heart. From the award-winning Hadlee Pavilion to the purpose built Sir Richard Hadlee Sports Centre and the expansive Oval itself, these facilities are available for hire by schools, clubs, charities, local organisations and individuals.

Sir Richard Hadlee Sports Centre
The Sir Richard Hadlee Sports Centre is a modern, purpose built, multi-lane indoor training facility designed to cater for all levels of cricket and other community sport. Conveniently located within the Hagley Oval precinct, it offers a versatile space ideal for coaching sessions, team trainings, school groups, and development programmes.
What's Available for Hire
- Individual lanes for cricket training
- Whole Sports Hall
- Bowling Machines (with lane hire)
- Changing rooms (by request)
- Community equipment (by request – free of charge) including football goals- various sizes, footballs (2 sizes), netballs (2 sizes) and goals, training aides – ground markers, and slalom poles, hockey sticks and balls (plastic).
Design & Features
- 5 bowling lanes: 3 with full 22m run-ups and 2 with 19m run-ups.
Dual Height Retractable tension nets: open the 850m² hall into one large space for sports and community activities like hockey, netball, and football.
Mezzanine floor: overlooking the hall for spectators
Gender-neutral changing rooms: modern showering facilities
