Visitor Guidelines

Hagley Oval is open to the public*

The public are free to wander around the precinct, including across the outfield and embankments but we ask that you stay off any wicket block and not enter any roped off or covered areas. We request that you not interfere with any Christchurch City Council grounds team carrying out their daily duties.

The facilities within the Precinct are not manned and therefore prearranged bookings are required to tour any of the buildings. Please refer to the Venue Hire page for more information.

Safety Guidelines

Sun exposure / protection

Remember to stay sun smart while enjoying the cricket! Wear a hat, and apply sunscreen regularly.

Moving vehicles

The Precinct is busy with a variety of shared places amongst a variety of users. Carparks and driveways are often shared between pedestrians and vehicles with a lot of vehicle movements around the Hadlee Pavilion and Sir Richard Hadlee Sports Centre. Please take care when moving around these spaces and be aware of everything happening around you.
Sun Protection Cricketing

CCTV cameras

For the safety and security of all visitors and players, Hagley Oval is monitored by CCTV cameras. This helps us maintain a welcoming and secure environment for everyone enjoying the grounds. All facilities are alarmed and monitored 24/7.

Ball strike

We have teams and players on site training throughout the year. Please be aware of balls being bowled and hit around the outdoor training nets (behind the Sir Richard Hadlee Sports Centre). Stay alert when walking around these areas and/or accessing the footbridge by the stream.
 
On match days please be aware that cricket balls can and do get hit into the crowd during matches. For your safety, we ask that you stay alert at all times and keep an eye on the action. If you’re moving around the venue, please use remain mindful of play.

Match Day Entry

See below for the the venue conditions of entry on ticketed match days.

Patron, Bag and Vehicle Searches

  • All patrons and their possessions may be subject to a search prior to being granted entry into the Venue, this may include the use of a handheld security wand. Any refusal to be searched will result in denied entry to the Venue.
  • Patrons and their possessions may also be searched during an event and when leaving the Venue. Any refusal to be searched will result in eviction from the Venue.
  • Unauthorised vehicles will not be permitted access to the Venue.
  • All authorised vehicles entering and leaving the Venue may be subject to a search. Any refusal to be searched will result in denied entry to the Venue.

Dress Code

  • Clothing must conform to reasonable standards of decency.
  • Where a dress code is indicated on the entry ticket, that dress code must be adhered to.
  • No bare feet permitted.
  • No gang patches permitted.
  • No high-visibility vests or clothing may be worn.
  • No branded clothing may be worn, or brought into the Venue, whether individually or by a group, which Event Management Staff consider is being worn or carried in an attempt to ambush the market at the match.
  • In the event of the Patron wearing a costume or other “dress-up” clothing, the clothing shall not be considered obscene or offensive by Event Management Staff nor shall be of a size that obstructs any other patron or their view of the match.

General

  • Hagley Oval is smoke-free at all times. Smoking is permitted only in designated areas which may be outside the perimeter.
  • Intoxicated persons will not be allowed entry.
  • All patrons entering the Venue do so at their own risk.
  • Hagley Oval is a non-smoking venue. Patrons are asked to exit the ground when wishing to smoke.
  • Unauthorised selling of merchandise, advertising or promotional giveaways are prohibited.
  • Liquor will not be served to minors and intoxicated persons, and no patron may remove liquor from the Venue.
  • There may be a liquor ban in the area/neighbourhood surrounding the Venue.

Trespass Notices

Any invasion of the playing surface will result in eviction from the Venue, and will, at the sole discretion of Venue Management, result in a trespass notice which will prevent the patron from attending further fixtures at the Venue for a period of up to 2 years.

Eviction from Venue

Patrons will be requested to leave the Venue during an event if they:

  • Are intoxicated or appear to be becoming intoxicated.
  • Are verbally or physically abusive.
  • Throw any missile.
  • Enter or attempt to enter the field of play at any time either prior, during or after a match.
  • Behave in a disorderly or offensive manner, or a manner contrary to public order.
  • Attempt to bring a prohibited item into the Venue.
  • Breach any part of the terms of these Venue Regulations.
  • Engage in any form of unauthorised betting or gambling at or around the Venue or facilitate from within the Venue the conduct of any form of unauthorised betting or gambling whether within or outside any Venue by third parties (in addition to eviction, further sanctions and penalties may apply).
  • Engage in, or conduct, any ambush marketing.
  • Commit any act deemed a crime in New Zealand Law.

Refusal of Entry

Patrons will be refused entry if:

  • They appear to be intoxicated or under the influence of drugs/narcotics.
  • They refuse to comply with requests from security and/or gate staff.
  • They have no valid entry ticket or accreditation pass.

Prohibited Items

The following items are not permitted in the Venue and will be confiscated:

  • Alcohol not purchased at the Venue.
  • Animals with the exception of guide dogs.
  • Drink containers with broken seals not purchased at the Venue.
  • Drink containers larger than 1.5 litre.
  • Aerosol cans, glass bottles and any breakable container.
  • Illicit drugs.
  • Bean bags or inflatable chairs.
  • Dangerous items/weapons – including, but not limited to knives, flares, fireworks and laser pointers.
  • Skateboards, roller blades, roller skates, scooters and bicycles.
  • Umbrellas within public seated/embankment areas.
  • Sound amplifying devices including whistles, loudhailers, air horns or similar devices.
  • Musical instruments unless pre-registered with Event Management Staff.
  • Prams and strollers within public seated/embankment areas.
  • Hard chilly bins and/or picnic hampers.
  • Flags, banners, etc. that may, at the sole discretion of the Event Management Staff, be considered too large or contain profanity or messages that could be deemed offensive. In all cases flag poles must be limited in length to no more than one hand width wider than the associated flag/banner.
  • Photographic, video or audio recording equipment for any purpose other than private non-commercial purposes, which may include, without limitation, video and/or audio recorders, camera tripods, monopods, selfie sticks or lenses with a total focal strength of greater than 200mm and commercial digital video equipment. The Event Management Staff will, at their sole discretion, determine whether or not an item is intended for personal or commercial use.
  • Any other item which the Event Management Staff (at their sole discretion) deems to be a prohibited item which may be a danger to or inconvenience any other patron.

Failure to comply with a direction from Event Management Staff at the Venue, or Police to leave the Venue may render the patron liable to arrest and prosecution for the offence of trespass under Section 4 of the Trespass Act 1980, as amended, which is punishable on conviction by a fine not exceeding $1,000 or a term of imprisonment not exceeding 3 months in terms of section 11(a) of the Trespass Act 1980, as amended.

What to wear to the Pavilion

The Hadlee Pavilion operates a dress code that we request all guests (including members) to the Miles Group Lounge comply with. This as outlined in the dress standards below.

Members Dress Standards

The minimum dress standard for men and women for all domestic and international cricket is smart casual​

General Standards

All members are reminded of their responsibility for ensuring the attire of guests introduced to the Miles Group Lounge conforms to the required standard. Canterbury Cricket Trust reserve the right of entry at all times. Please note that all guests and Members of the Trust must ensure that their accreditation such as tickets/swingers/wristbands are always visible. All Hagley Oval ground entry conditions apply.

  • Shoes must be worn at all times. Ripped or torn jeans, track pants, beach or sports shorts, jandals, beach shoes, singlets, hoodies are not permitted.
  • Clothing with offensive messages is not permitted.
  • All officially licensed replica New Zealand or Canterbury or visiting team player shirts are permitted.
  • All sanctioned New Zealand and visiting team giveaway headwear is acceptable but is not to worn inside the
  • pavilion.

Members/guests will be denied admission to Member areas if they do not meet these requirements. Behaviour, conduct and dress will be monitored by staff.

Men

  • A collared shirt is required. Jumpers and jackets must have a collared shirt underneath. Jackets are recommended for international cricket but not compulsory. Ties are optional.
  • Tailored dress jeans are permitted. Track Pants are not acceptable.
  • Smart casual knee-length tailored shorts are acceptable. No other shorts are permitted including denim shorts or sports shorts.
  • Business or smart casual shoes are expected. No jandals, sandals and the like (if we see toes, the answer is no). Sports shoes are not encouraged and unsuitable for international matches.

Women

  • No brief or revealing clothing. Clothing that is see-through, exposes a midriff, has a low-cut or low-buttoned front, is ripped, frayed or torn is not permitted.
  • Tailored dress jeans are permitted. Track Pants are not acceptable. Activewear is not permitted.
  • Jandals, scuffs and sports shoes are not permitted. Dress sandals are permitted.

Children

  • Children under 15 years of age are exempt from the above but are expected to adhere to the general dress standards of the lounge, including a collared shirt for males over 15 years.
