Turf Meets Surf at the Super Smash Launch

09 December 2025.

New Zealand’s T20 stars will descend on Sumner Beach today for the official launch of the 2025-26 season of Super Smash presented by KFC.

Representatives from all twelve teams are set to get their toes in the sand alongside Surf Lifesaving New Zealand lifeguards to celebrate the return of KFC Super 6’s for Surf.

Throughout the Super Smash season, KFC will donate $100 to Surf Lifesaving New Zealand for every six hit, an initiative that raised $38,100 last summer.

The 32-day, 64-game competition will see BLACKCAPS, WHITE FERNS and rising stars battle it out across the country from Boxing Day through to the finals weekend at Christchurch’s Hagley Oval on January 30 and 31.

The competition is set to deliver another blockbuster summer of cricket building on the momentum of a landmark 2024-25 season that saw TVNZ broadcasts reach over one million Kiwis and 7.3 million views across NZC’s digital channels.

NZC Chief Executive Scott Weenink said the Super Smash had firmly established itself as an essential part of a Kiwi summer.

“We were delighted with the numbers from last season, but it’s not just about the numbers, the quality of cricket we’re seeing in this competition is excellent,” Weenink said.

“We saw the likes of Bevon Jacobs and Emma McLeod earning international call-ups off the back of their Super Smash performances, and I have no doubt we’ll see more players make that leap this summer.

“The Super Smash is the perfect showcase for everything that’s exciting about T20 cricket – big hitting, big moments, athletic fielding, and plenty of drama.

“With 64 games across 32 days, fans are going to be treated to non-stop entertainment from Boxing Day right through to the finals in Christchurch at the end of January.”

For the first time in history the Super Smash will be broadcast by Sony in India, marking a significant step in enhancing the visibility of NZC, the Major Associations and New Zealand players within cricket’s largest and most lucrative market.

Wet & Forget will make its debut as front-of-shirt partners at the competition’s opening double-header at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Boxing Day, as the Northern Brave host both the Auckland Hearts and Auckland Aces in what shapes as a fierce rivalry to start the season.

With play scheduled almost every day until the final round-robin matches on January 26, fans will have no shortage of opportunities to see their favourite players in action.

New Year’s Day will see a repeat of last season’s men’s final, with the Canterbury Kings hosting the Central Stags at Hagley Oval, with the hosts desperate to claim their first T20 title in 20 years after finishing as runners-up in five consecutive seasons.

Suzanne Pearce, Executive Manager of the Canterbury Cricket Trust, said Christchurch was ready to deliver a spectacular finals weekend.

“We’re thrilled to have both the Elimination Finals and Grand Finals at Hagley Oval,” she said.

“Our crowds the last few seasons are testament to how loyal the fans are here, and it’s a chance for them to see the best players in the country play some awesome cricket.”
