Hagley Oval isn’t just a venue — it’s part of the daily rhythm of life in Christchurch. Located in the heart of Hagley Park, the ground is open to the public for most of the year, inviting locals and visitors alike to enjoy its world-class setting up close. With the exception of ticketed match days and a few days set aside for event setup and pack-down, you’re welcome to stroll across the same outfield graced by the world’s best international cricketers.
Bring your dog for a walk, enjoy a quiet moment in the stands, or simply take in the immaculate surroundings — the perfectly manicured turf is the envy of backyard bowlers across the city. Watch the grounds team at work as they prepare the wicket block with care and precision; on the right day, you can spot new grass sprouting through the crease.
But when match day arrives, Hagley Oval transforms. With standard capacity of up to 12,00 spectators and for major events (ICC World Cups) up to 20,000 fans, the venue comes alive with atmosphere — from the relaxed vibe of the grassy embankments to the premium experience offered in the Hadlee Pavilion.
Six towering floodlights enable world-class day-night fixtures, while modern amenities, accessible facilities, and a wide range of food and beverage options ensure everyone is looked after.
Surrounded by the stunning backdrop of the Botanic Gardens and Port Hills, it’s no surprise Hagley Oval is a favourite among players, fans, and broadcasters alike. Whether you’re there for a quiet walk or a sold-out Test match, Hagley Oval is a place where community and sport come together year-round.
Match Day Information
Seating Options
- General Admission – Grass embankment only. For ticketed matches dedicated Family Zones and Alcohol Free Zones are available, otherwise it is standard general admission. These zones are able to be selected during the ticket purchase process.
- Miles Group Lounge in the Hadlee Pavilion and Stand – Seats inside the lounge with full floor to ceiling glass windows overlooking the field of play. Guests also have access to the seats in the Pavilion stand as well as the small members area on the embankment at the southern end of the Hadlee Pavilion. This includes access to the tables and chairs at the Boundary fence for members and guest use.
- Marquee Hospitality – Tables and Chairs in the hospitality marquees on the embankment by Light Tower A. Marquee Hospitality includes all food and beverage for the duration of the match.

Gate Information
Hagley Oval has up to 4 entry gates for ticketed match days – see map below.
On non ticketed match days, there are no gates or fences in place*
*unless immediately following / preceding a ticketed match day.
Please note, not every gate is in use for every ticketed match day.
- Gate A – General Admission and Accessibility Admission, Located next to the St Albans Cricket Clubrooms
- Gate B – General Admission and Marquee Hospitality access, Located next to the Riccarton Cricket Clubrooms
- Gate C – General Admission access, Located near the Christ College Pavilion
- Gate D – Members / VIP access (this does not include Corporate/Marquee hospitality), Located next to the Groundsman’s House

The Sports Hall is a multi use space (approx. 850 sqm) that can be used for a variety of sports and activities. Hire is subject to availability and terms and conditions apply.
